Christening Tree

My lovely friend Michelle asked me if I could cobble together a fingerprint tree as a present for her friend who's kids are being christened tomorrow...this is it!

(For those of you that are thinking 'What the hell is a fingerprint tree?' the idea is that guests at the christening/wedding/housewarming will put one of their fingers on an ink pad and then place it next to one of the branches of the tree and sign their name below. It's a great way of recording who came along and then you can frame it and put it up on the wall)

Seed Pod

I enjoyed doing yesterdays so much that I decided to have another go today. They are surprisingly difficult to do...maybe difficult is not the right word...challenging is perhaps better. It really makes you think about the marks that you are putting down on the paper and, like the blind contour drawings, it is interesting to see what it looks like when I open my eyes!

Fossil

When I got home from London today I decided that I wanted to try something a bit different so I dug out one of my many art books and chose an exercise at random. The aim of this one was to draw what something feels like rather than what it actually looks like. You close your eyes and try to depict on paper what you are feeling. I have a lovely wee fossil at home which is both hard, smooth and pock marked. This is what it felt like :-)

Greed

Barclays bank have proven, yet again, that greed is the name of the game.

Sorry is just not good enough Mr Diamond!

Leaves

I decided to do something different today (plus I was working today which meant that I had less time to draw). I thought I would draw some leaves on a stalk and then I thought it looked a lonely on it's own so decided to give it some friends.

(Blogger is back up and running!! Yay!!)

Untitled # 3.2 (Watercolour)

This is an enlargement of # 3. I thought it would look good for the collage and decided, since I was going to do a collage of it, I would do a watercolour of it too!

(I have now contacted blogger to say that I am having a problem. They have come back to me to say that it is a problem that they are aware of (Phew, not just me then!) and that it should be fixed by tomorrow. I shall keep my fingers crossed!)

Untitled # 3 (Watercolour)

I'm really liking how this one turned out. I think I'm getting a bit more control over the watercolour. As most of you know I've only tried using watercolours a couple of times before so they are taking a bit of getting used to. I like how the colours blend in this one and that you can see the change from one to the other.

(Something funny seems to be happening with my blog! I'm posting the pictures every day but they don't seem to be coming up on the actual blog...despite it saying that they are published. Hopefully this one will work)

Untitled # 2 (Watercolour)

Yup, happy with this one and am liking the technique! The light was not brilliant when I took the photograph but you can still see all the detail :-).

(I had fun doing this but it will be interesting to see how it compares to the collage
when I have time to do it!)

Untitled # 2 (Colour Experiment)

Before I go ahead with the other two styles I decided that I would just have a go at doing a more controlled version and tangling over the top. This really doesn't work for me. I think that the collage will give the control but with the texture adding another dimension. This just looks...well...a bit odd! Tomorrow I'm going to re-do this using the watercolour technique that I've decided to go with. (The collage ones will have to wait till I have enough time because they take an age to do!)

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 1.4)

Hmmm....I think out of all the colour versions I like the collage best (I bloody would wouldn't I...it's the one that took the longest to do!) but I also like the watercolour with the black tangles over the top. Aaarrggg!! Cant decide what format to do the others in! What do you think?

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 1.3)

After working on yesterday BRIGHT painting I wondered what it would look like if I used more muted colours. I think yesterdays worked better but this has given me an idea. I think I might try tangling over the top to see how it comes out...not in black though (I think that would be overpowering) but perhaps in a darker shade of the underlying colour.

(The benefit of working from home during the day is that I have access to all my art stuff in the evening. Means that I get to play more than I do when I'm in London)

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 1.2)

Well, I spent some time working out what colours needed to go where today! I'm rather pleased with how this has turned out. It's rather bright and cheery isn't it...
looks even more like washing on a line now :-)

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 1.1)

I think this looks loads better since I defined the lines and added some tangles to it. I'm now thinking that I should do one that is less 'messy' and perhaps I need to spend some time working out what colours need to go where. Definitely prefer this one to yesterdays but am not convinced that it works better than the collage. Still, getting there with this one me thinks :-)

(I also seem to be having some technical problems which I am going to have to iron out...these are not always coming up when they are supposed to. Will have to go google to try and find out what is going on...)

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 2.1)

I had grand plans today! I was going to re-draw this and re-paint it but then our lovely neighbours phoned (am so going to miss them when we move) and suggested Sunday lunch at the Horse Guards in Brokenborough. We had a fab lunch and, after a couple of glasses of wine, there was no way that painting was going to be done so I went back to yesterdays painting. I've thickened the lines and filled in the 'dots'. I'm not sure this is working...the purple at the bottom is so dark that you can't really see the picture underneath. I think I shall go back to the other version tomorrow.

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 2)

Before I start playing with yesterdays image I decided to have a go at trying a different technique just to see which one was worth taking forward. Using the same masking technique I decided to flick paint over the drawing rather than go for the traditional 'painting'. I really like how this has turned out. Again, the image needs more work but I like the effect. Looks like I have two to take forward!

(I could, of course, continue this series with the collage cause that worked really well (Click here) - and I may end up doing that - but the whole point of doing a drawing a day is to use the time to improve and experiment so that is what I am doing!)

Untitled.1 (Colour Experiment # 1)

It's been a while since I had the chance to have an art day. I decided that I would go back to my Untitled drawings and see what I could do about adding some colour. I drew 'Untitled.1' out again then, using masking tape, covered the areas I wanted to leave white and got out my watercolour paints. This needs further work as it's not right...not sure what I will do to put it right so watch this space...Yes, I will share it even if it all goes horribly wrong.

(The lines in the blanks were caused where the paint ran into the cracks...I kinda like them!)

Aztec

I'm really enjoying experimenting with printing. I quite like this and am thinking that I could perhaps do hand-made wrapping paper or, using fabric dye, make hankies or cushions. What do you think?

Enchanted Tree

Tom and I went to see Snow White and The Huntsman tonight. It was fabulous! Charlize Theron was absolutely brilliant as the evil Queen! Anyway, there was a lovely section where the main characters were in an enchanted forest. I was rather inspired and decided that I would do my version of an enchanted tree.

Tom's Wallpaper (BCD)

I am totally knackered tonight! It was THINk's AGM today and I ended up running around like a loony putting up tables and moving chairs...200 chairs to be precise! I was sitting on Tom's sofa watching Channel 4 news (as you do!) thinking 'What can I draw?' when I realised that it was staring me in the face! So here is my blind contour drawing of Tom's Wallpaper :-)

Tree (Blind)

and the last one in the challenge was to draw a tree. I am rather pleased with this one...it prompted a 'Are you sure you have your eyes closed?' question from Coleen.
I can honestly say, with hand on heart, that they were.

Wallet (Blind)

I have been working all day today on a Report for THINk. It has been a looooooong day!

Part of yesterday's challenge was to draw a wallet with money in it. This was my attempt!

Victorian Camera (Blind)

We met up with our friends Kim, Rich and their two kids Coleen and Anna yesterday. Coleen challenged me to a drawing competition...we had so much fun! I had to close my eyes and draw whatever she chose and then she had to do the same. She suggested I draw a victorian camera being operated by a man wearing a top hat. This is what I drew!

High Five # 3

Love this one!

I have had so much fun playing about with these! It's been a very welcome break from the detailed work that I am doing on my latest research project. I spent most of this afternoon working out percentages and those of you who know me will know just how much I love doing that!!

(Will do something different tomorrow I promise!)

High Five # 2

I liked yesterdays 'High Five' so much I thought I would give it another go today but add more paint to see if I could get a more dramatic effect. I like how the swirls are more defined in this one (I think it looks a bit live a 5 on the side of a dice) but I think I preferred yesterdays.

A 'High Five' to May's winner

Ok, so I'm a wee bit late in doing the draw. In my defence it was a holiday weekend and we are in the process of buying a house! The winner was chosen by Kay M Laro (an old school friend of mine) who picked number 123 and the name next to that was.....wait for it.....the lovely DK Green!

Congratulations lovely lady :-D.
Please have a look through May's pictures and select the one you would like.

Commiserations to the rest of you but hey...there is always next month!

(On a more art related note, I decided that i would make a print of my hand for todays picture. I blotted it on kitchen roll first and discovered that the pattern transferred over into the print. I love the swirls in it...a happy accident! I may now have to do some more printing...I REALLY enjoyed doing this one!)

Living Room # 3

This is the final one of my living room. It features (Yes, I know your not daft but just incase you looked at that thing in the corner and thought 'What the hell is that?') our infamous cat tree or 'Cat Condo' as one of our Thai removal men called it! I swapped one of my drawings for it a few years ago and our splats love it! They sleep on it, hide in it, sharpen their claws on it and fight over who gets the top spot on it.

(Not sure what I will work on tomorrow. I have a big work deadline looming so am thinking sketches but right now we are off to Bristol. We're going to see prometheus)

Living Room # 2

I decided that I would do another one today starting from the point I finished at yesterday. These have been really good fun to draw and I can't help but feel that it is kinda nice to have a drawing record of the living room cause (hopefully) we will be moving into our own place soon and leaving this one behind.

So here we have the plant, dining room table with laptop and handbag on it, jacket hanging over a chair, another plant and the cupboard door. Not the most exciting drawing I have ever done but hey...

(FBers...I'm not ignoring you I can't leave comments or update my status. I just keep getting error reports...hopefully normal service will be resumed soon)

Living Room # 1

I have been doing a lot of 'tight' drawings recently and, although I have enjoyed doing them, they are extremely time consuming. I've decided to try and pepper them with other things to keep both me, and you, interested. I have a number of 'drawing project' books so I picked one up, opened it at random and decided to draw whatever was suggested on the page.

I had to do a drawing of the room I was in without ever moving the pen from the page and I had to let the pen follow my line of vision. I started at the wind chime we have hanging from the curtain rail, moved my way across the window, went down over the table, up Chris's leg, over to the drinks cabinet and then across to the patio door. The purpose of the exercise was to give the impression of what is there without trying to re-create everything in minute detail.

(I really enjoyed doing this and I was rather pleased with how Chris's foot and leg turned out)

Untitled (In Colour)

I have now finished exploring the 'lymph nodes' idea and, as promised, am going to try them out in colour. This is a collage of 'Untitled' (You can see the original here).

I'm really pleased with how this turned out but my god it took an age to do! I might try another technique for the next one.

(I can't believe we are now into June and it is time to do another draw to see who shall win one of May's drawings! I shall do the draw in the next couple of days)

Untitled # 6

Here is the tangle of 'Join The Dots # 6'.
(To be honest, I prefer yesterdays!)
